How to Buy a CNC Press Brake: A Complete Buyer's Checklist for Indian Fabricators
If a fiber laser is the heart of a modern sheet metal shop, the CNC press brake is its backbone. A laser can cut hundreds of blanks per hour, but if bending is stuck in trial-and-error, angle variation across 3-metre sheets or overheating hydraulics in 44°C summers, the whole line slows down.
Most buyers compare only two numbers: tonnage and length. Six months later they discover the open height is too small for deep enclosures, the centre of a 3 m bend is 93° while the ends are 90°, or tool changes take 45 minutes. This checklist helps fabricators in Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat, Pune, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Faridabad and Vapi avoid those mistakes.
1. Calculate Tonnage and Bending Length
Air bending is today's standard. For 90° air bending of mild steel:
- V-die opening: V = 8 × T (T = sheet thickness)
- Inside radius: ≈ 0.16 × V
- Minimum flange: ≈ 0.77 × V
- Total tonnage: force (tons/metre) × bend length (metres)
Material multipliers versus mild steel: SS 304/316 ≈ 1.4–1.6×, high-tensile / Hardox ≈ 2.0–2.5×, aluminium 5052 ≈ 0.5–0.6×.
Safety margin: add 20–25%. If your heaviest job needs 95 tons, don't buy a 100-ton machine — choose 125 or 160 tons. Running hydraulics near maximum every day wears valves, seals and oil quickly.
Use our free Press Brake Tonnage Calculator to check force, V-die and minimum flange in seconds.
2. Open Height, Stroke and Throat Depth
- Open height (daylight): standard 400–450 mm; for box and panel work choose 500–600 mm.
- Stroke: at least 200–250 mm so bent parts come out easily.
- Throat depth: 400–450 mm on a 3.1 m machine for long flanges past the side frames.
3. CNC vs NC: Which Controller?
NC (torsion bar) machines need manual depth setting and trial bends. For job work and high-mix production choose an electro-hydraulic synchro CNC with Y1/Y2 cylinders and linear scales.
- 3+1 axis (Y1, Y2, X + crowning): minimum for accurate work.
- 4+1 axis (adds R): recommended for stepped profiles and Z-bends.
- 6+1 axis (adds Z1, Z2): for frequent width changes.
- Controllers: Delem DA-53T / DA-58T / DA-66T / DA-69T, ESA or Cybelec — look for graphical bend sequence and DXF import.
4. Crowning: Mechanical vs Hydraulic
Under load the ram and bed deflect, so the centre angle opens up. Hydraulic crowning works but can drift with oil temperature. CNC motorised mechanical wedge crowning is our recommendation: the controller calculates deflection and sets the wedges automatically, giving consistent angles (typically within ±0.3°) across the full length.
5. Backgauge Speed and Accuracy
- HIWIN / PMI linear guides and ground ball screws with AC servo motors.
- X-axis speed of 300–400 mm/s and positioning accuracy around ±0.02 mm.
- Hardened multi-step fingers and front sheet supports for wide sheets.
6. Hydraulics Built for Indian Conditions
- Bosch Rexroth or Hoerbiger proportional valve block.
- Low-noise internal gear pump.
- Generous oil tank, return filter, temperature indicator and an oil cooler for 2–3 shift operation.
- Seamless tubes with bite-type fittings to reduce leak points.
7. Tooling and Quick Clamping
Choose European / Promecam or Wila style sectional tooling (835 mm segments with 10–100 mm split pieces for box bending) and manual quick, pneumatic or hydraulic clamping instead of bolt clamps.
8. Operator Safety
- Laser guarding (DSP, Fiessler, Lazer Safe) under the punch tip.
- Side and rear interlocked guards that stop the machine when opened.
- Foot pedal with emergency stop and two-hand mode where needed.
9. Factory Acceptance Test Before Dispatch
- Full-length bend: bend a 3 m sheet of your main thickness and measure the angle at 5 points.
- Repeatability: bend 10 identical parts and check angle and flange size.
- Backgauge squareness across the full width.
- 45-minute run: check pump noise and stable oil temperature.
10. Local Service, Spares and Software
- Service engineers near your industrial cluster — Gujarat, Maharashtra, South India and NCR.
- Ready stock of seals, valves, servo drives and controller spares.
- Offline programming with Metalix CAD/CAM to reduce setup time on the machine.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size CNC press brake should a small job shop in India buy first?
For most job shops doing 1–4 mm MS and SS work, a 100–125 ton × 3100 mm 4+1 axis CNC press brake covers 80–90% of jobs. It handles panels, brackets, enclosures and channels without overloading the machine.
How much tonnage do I need to bend 6 mm mild steel?
With a 48 mm V-die (8 × T), 6 mm MS needs roughly 49 tons per metre. A 2.5 m bend therefore needs about 122 tons, so a 160-ton machine is the safe choice.
Is a CNC press brake worth it over an NC machine?
Yes, if you do varied jobs. CNC cuts setup time, removes trial bends, and keeps angles consistent between operators. Most shops recover the extra cost through less scrap and faster job changes within 1–2 years.
What is the price of a CNC press brake in India?
Price depends on tonnage, length, controller, axes, crowning and tooling. A practical way is to share your thickness, material and length with us — we send a configuration-wise quote so you compare like-for-like.
How long does delivery and installation take?
Standard models typically ship in a few weeks after order confirmation. Installation, levelling and operator training at your site usually take 2–4 days.
Do I need a special foundation?
Most machines up to about 160 tons and 3.1 m need only a level, strong RCC floor. Heavier or longer machines may need a dedicated foundation — we share the layout drawing before dispatch.
Can I bend stainless steel on the same machine?
Yes. Stainless needs about 1.4–1.6 times the force of mild steel and a slightly larger V-die. Size your tonnage for your thickest stainless job.
What maintenance does a CNC press brake need?
Daily lubrication checks, regular oil level and temperature checks, filter change as per schedule, and an oil change around every 4,000–6,000 running hours. Keep the ram and backgauge guides clean.
Do you provide service and training in Gujarat, Maharashtra and South India?
Yes. Rayzon Technology supports customers across Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat, Vapi, Pune, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore and Faridabad with installation, operator training and after-sales service.
Can I see a live demo with my own parts?
Yes. Send us your drawing or sample sheet and we arrange a demonstration bend so you can check angle accuracy before you decide.
